Earlier Report Observations

Coconut production in Mozambique remained stable at around 302.5 thousand tonnes from 2018 to 2019, despite underlying challenges such as the aging of palm trees and pest infestations that threatened long-term sustainability. A shift among growers toward selling fresh coconuts at higher prices in local markets, rather than supplying copra for oil and soap industries, began to reduce raw material availability for processing, contributing to a slight dip in overall output to 301.3 thousand tonnes by 2020–2021.

Output fell more noticeably to 295.3 thousand tonnes in 2022, pressured by severe supply shortages and logistical difficulties that constrained market availability and drove up local prices. The following year, production rebounded to 311.0 thousand tonnes, supported by private-sector investments like Grupo Madal's large-scale renewal of over 31 000 hectares of coconut plantations in Zambézia Province, aimed at reviving yields. Meanwhile, innovations such as Saboeira de Inhambane’s bioremediation technology using coconut husks highlighted diversification within the coconut value chain.
