The market for cocoa shells, husks, skins and waste in Belarus showed variability from 2018 to 2022. Volume grew from 1 204 t in 2018 to 1 251 t in 2019, then declined to 1 163 t in 2020. It stabilized near 1 164 t in 2021 before falling again to 1 040 t in 2022.

In 2023, market volume plummeted by 34% to 687 t. This sharp contraction was driven by a 60-70% surge in global cocoa bean prices and supply shortages from drought in West Africa, which severely reduced cocoa processing in the country. Additionally, Belarusian chocolate manufacturers began reformulating products to use less cocoa, while consumer preferences shifted toward cocoa-free confectionery segments, further decreasing demand for cocoa waste.

In 2020, Belarus produced 1 112 tonnes of cocoa shells, husks, skins and waste, which represented a 9.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 15%, translating to an average annual decline of 5.3%. The only year that saw growth was 2019, with a modest increase of 2.1%.

Belarus's exports of cocoa shells, husks, skins and waste declined for the third year in a row in 2020. That year, exports amounted to 15 000 kg, showing a slight decrease of 9.1% from the prior year. Over the full 2017-2020 period, exports dropped sharply by 79.2%, which corresponds to a compound annual growth rate of -40.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia and Ukraine were the key destinations for Belarus's exports of cocoa shells, husks, skins and waste in volume terms, together accounting for 100.0% of total shipments.

The export market in value terms showed considerable volatility during the observed period. It peaked in 2017 and hit its lowest point in 2019, with a 59-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Belarus's exports of cocoa shells, husks, skins and waste reached 10 100 US dollars, marking a dramatic surge of 1 162.5% compared to the previous year. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 800 US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 97.0%.

Import volumes of cocoa shells, husks, skins and waste into Belarus showed an unstable trend over the timeframe. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 35 500 kg, while the highest was reached in 2020 at 65 410 kg, reflecting a 1.8-fold gap. In 2020, imports increased significantly by 84.3% compared to the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 24.4%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 14.9%, which equates to an average annual decline of 5.2%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 16 300 US dollars, while the maximum was in 2018 at 31 800 US dollars. The largest decline took place in 2019, with a 48.7% drop.
