From 2018 to 2021, the market volume for cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste in Guatemala rose from 1 970 t to 2 270 t. This growth was supported by government and private sector efforts to strengthen the cocoa value chain for export, which included eliminating origin subsidies to improve competitiveness. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food (MAGA) further contributed by providing training and technical assistance to producers in planting, fertilization, pruning, and harvesting, enhancing cultivation practices and output.

Market volume growth moderated in 2022 and 2023, reaching 2 284 t and 2 313 t respectively, indicating stabilization. During this period, MAGA's production of cocoa plants aimed at preserving the ancient crop and promoting sustainable cultivation, along with SICACAO's alliances to strengthen the cocoa sector across Central America, helped maintain steady production levels.

In 2024, Government Agreement 164-2021 and its reforms on solid waste management established mandatory classification and separation of organic waste, including cocoa shells and husks. The regulation, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) with municipalities, changes the handling requirements for these agro-industrial by-products, with full implementation scheduled for February 2025.

Guatemala's production of cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 2 111 tonnes, marking a 3.9% rise from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 3.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.2%. The lowest output was in 2018 at 1 971 tonnes, which also saw the biggest drop of 3.2%.
