In value terms, the market expanded from 9.7 million US dollars in 2018 to 14.5 million US dollars in 2021, supported by global cocoa and chocolate market trends which influenced prices and demand.

In 2022, market volume contracted to 3 265 t and value fell to 11.2 million US dollars. This decline was driven by sharp increases in raw material prices for cocoa beans and sugar, fueled by global market speculation and supply shortages. Climate change, leading to diseases and pests in cocoa trees, further threatened global supplies and raised production costs, reducing overall market volume.

The market recovered in 2023 to 3 380 t in volume and 13.9 million US dollars in value. Persistently high raw material prices continued to pressure the market, while Norwegian consumers showed growing interest in Fair Trade-certified and organic cocoa, as well as products with perceived health benefits such as blood pressure reduction, supporting demand in premium segments.

Norway's production of cocoa powder and cake has increased for the second year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 2 047 tonnes, marking a significant 16.1% rise compared to 2020. Looking back from 2018 to 2021, production grew by 23.9%, which translates to an average annual increase of 7.4%. The lowest production level was in 2019, at 1 527 tonnes, when it fell by 7.6%.

Norway's production of cocoa powder and cake has risen for the second consecutive year. In 2021, the output was valued at 10 889 thousand US dollars, a strong 29.0% increase from the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, production value grew by 41.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019, at 6 984 thousand US dollars, when it declined by 9.5%.
