The Swedish cocoa powder and cake market contracted from 9 000 t in 2018 to 6 569 t in 2020, with value dropping to 25 867 thousand USD in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains in 2020, significantly reducing imports and market volume, while domestic production increased to partially compensate for the shortfall.

Market recovery began in 2021, reaching 8 651 t and 33 196 thousand USD by 2022. This turnaround was supported by the January 2022 implementation of EU Regulation 2018/848 on organic production and new deforestation due diligence rules, which boosted demand for sustainably certified cocoa products among Swedish consumers.

In 2023, market volume jumped to 10 567 t, valued at 42 970 thousand USD, driven by a sharp rise in imports. Swedish companies like Svenska Kakao and Chokladfabrik launched new lines of ceremonial and sustainably grown cocoa, focusing on premium segments. By 2024, record cocoa prices emerged due to poor harvests in West Africa, affecting import costs.

Sweden's production of cocoa powder and cake has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Sweden produced 2 344 tonnes of cocoa powder and cake, marking a 7.5% rise compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 16%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 5.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 2 005 tonnes, with the largest decline that year at 0.8%. In contrast, the most significant increase occurred in 2019, with an 8.8% jump.

Sweden's production value of cocoa powder and cake has risen for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 12 815 thousand US dollars, showing a strong increase of 12.4% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 17.7%, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6%.

After two years of growth, Sweden's exports of cocoa powder and cake declined. In 2020, Sweden exported 296 tonnes, down by 46.6% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 15.1%, equating to an annualized decline of 5.3%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 555 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase that year at 33.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Finland, and Poland were the main destinations for Sweden's cocoa powder and cake exports in kind. The Netherlands accounted for 34.6% of exports, Finland for 31.5%, and Poland for 22.2%. Together, these three countries represented 88.3% of total export flows.

Following two years of increase, Sweden's export value of cocoa powder and cake fell. In 2020, exports amounted to 1 620 thousand US dollars, a reduction of 44.2% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 13.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -4.9%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 2 903 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase that year at 25.2%.
