Coal production in Tajikistan began a steady climb from 1.9 million tons in 2018, reaching a record high of over 2 million tons in 2019. This growth was supported by the dominance of state-owned enterprises like 'Shakhta FON-Yagnob' and 'TALKO-Resource,' which controlled approximately 97% of output. The industry's expansion was further underpinned by a base of more than 200 enterprises using coal as fuel.

Demand for coal received a significant boost in 2020 when regional electricity consumption restrictions led to increased reliance on solid fuel, pushing up retail prices. This shift sustained market growth even as production stabilized, with domestic consumption absorbing nearly all output. The trend continued into 2021 as extraction kept rising, supported by a growing number of licensed mining companies.

By 2022, production surged to 2.4 million tons, though a sharp rise in exports to 374 thousand tons limited the net market volume increase to 2.1 million tons. Domestic demand remained firm due to persistent electricity supply constraints, while imports from Kyrgyzstan met specific quality preferences despite higher transport costs.
