Milk production in Tajikistan grew steadily from 1 037 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 176 thousand tons in 2023, which was the main driver of the market volume increase from 1 040 thousand tons to 1 178 thousand tons over the same period. This growth began with exceeding 1 million tons in 2018 and continued annually, despite structural constraints in the industry.

Despite rising production, less than a third of all milk underwent industrial processing due to weak infrastructure, limiting the development of the processed dairy market. At the same time, dependence on imports of dairy products from Russia and other EAEU countries persisted, as domestic production did not fully cover demand for processed goods. Dietary traditions and consumer preferences also influenced milk consumption levels.

In 2020, rising milk and dairy prices amid overall food cost inflation did not restrain market volume growth. By 2023, production accelerated, showing a 10.6% increase in the first nine months of the year, which contributed to further market expansion.
