This growth was supported by a period of rising global demand and improved logistics infrastructure, which facilitated trade, while consumption peaked with a rapid increase reflecting strong consumer interest in the region.

Market volume continued to rise, reaching 15 733 thousand tons by 2023. The pace of growth moderated in the final year, coinciding with a peak in global citrus consumption that signaled a maturing market. Throughout the period, production increases met the expanding domestic demand.

In 2020, output was valued at 15 975 M $ US, showing a strong 24.7% rise compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value grew by 30.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.3%.

Exports citrus fruit from South-eastern Asia

After declining for two years, citrus fruit exports from South-eastern Asia rebounded in 2020. Exports reached 87.0 K t, up 52.3% year-over-year. However, from 2017 to 2020, exports overall decreased by 33.5%, averaging an annual decline of 12.7%. The lowest point was in 2019 at 57.1 K t, with the largest drop of 40.0% occurring that same year.

From 2017 to 2020, the export market for citrus fruit in kind was diverse. China accounted for 22.2% of exports, the United Arab Emirates for 14.6%, and the Netherlands for 9.3%.
