From 2018 to 2020, the citrus fruit market volume in Mozambique expanded from 156.7 thousand tons to 161.5 thousand tons. This gradual increase coincided with the establishment of Afrifruta, a private fruit processing company in Inharrime, which resulted from government-led horticulture programs initiated in 2011, enhancing the fruit sector's capacity and supporting market growth.

After a slight dip in 2021, the market stabilized at around 159.4 thousand tons in 2022. During this period, the industry faced significant post-harvest losses estimated at 30-50% due to limited investment in processing infrastructure, constraining the growth of domestic supply and keeping the market volume flat.

In 2023, the market surged to 165.9 thousand tons, driven primarily by a sharp rise in imports to 11.2 thousand tons, which compensated for stable domestic production and met increased demand.

Mozambique's citrus fruit production has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 160 451 tonnes of citrus fruit, which represents a 1.1% rise compared to the previous year. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 156 400 tonnes, marking a 2.4% decline from 2017. However, production rebounded in 2019 with a 1.5% increase.

After two years of growth, Mozambique's cross-border shipments of citrus fruit declined in 2020. Exports fell to 216 tonnes, a sharp contraction of 63.2% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 35.4%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -13.5%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 586 tonnes, following a significant 58.7% increase in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, Eswatini remained the primary destination for Mozambique's citrus fruit exports in volume terms, accounting for 84.8% of total shipments. The remaining share was distributed among various smaller markets.

Following a two-year advance, Mozambique's citrus fruit exports in value terms declined in 2020. The country exported 35.8 thousand US dollars worth of citrus fruit, representing a 40.7% drop compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 13.2%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 4.2%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 60.4 thousand US dollars, after a notable 39.4% increase in 2018.

Throughout 2017–2020, Eswatini played the leading role in Mozambique's citrus fruit exports in value terms, with a share of 75.8% of total flows. Other markets collectively accounted for the remainder.

Mozambique's citrus fruit imports have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country imported 1 235 tonnes of citrus fruit, marking a 41.2% uptick compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 31.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.7%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 823 tonnes, which represented a 12.2% decline from 2017.

From 2017 to 2020, South Africa was the key partner for Mozambique's citrus fruit imports in volume terms, accounting for 99.5% of total flows.
