The market volume for coconuts, Brazil nuts and cashews in Mozambique contracted from 422.8 thousand tons in 2018 to 367.3 thousand tons in 2020. This decline was primarily driven by a sharp increase in exports, which rose from 10.0 to 77.2 thousand tons over the period. Domestic production, however, continued to expand, reaching 444.3 thousand tons in 2020, supported by the ongoing growth in agricultural output for cashew nuts.

From 2021, the domestic market volume recovered to 386.0 thousand tons and stabilized around 389 thousand tons through 2023. A key development was the start of raw cashew nut exports in December 2021, marking the entry of new exporters into international trade. Production grew to 468.5 thousand tons in 2023, the highest in the period, while exports hit a record 80.3 thousand tons, bolstered by the new Cashew Law enacted in July 2023, which reformed sector regulations and established new commercialization rules.

In Mozambique, the production of coconuts, Brazil nuts, and cashews increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 444.3 thousand tonnes, showing only a slight fluctuation compared to the previous year. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 432.5 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 1.5%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase of 2.3%.

The export market for these nuts showed significant volatility during this period. The lowest exports were recorded in 2018 at 9 994 tonnes, with the largest decline of 51.9% that year. In 2019, exports surged by 223.7%, reaching their peak in 2020 at 77 221 tonnes, a 138.7% increase from the previous year. This resulted in a 7.7-fold difference between the lowest and highest export volumes.

Between 2017 and 2020, India and Vietnam were the primary export destinations for Mozambique's coconuts, Brazil nuts, and cashews, together accounting for 96.4% of total export volumes. Other partners each held significantly smaller shares.

The export market in value terms displayed an unstable trend over these years. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 17 329 thousand US dollars, with the largest decline of 59.4% that year. Exports then peaked in 2019 at 90 621 thousand US dollars, marking the largest increase of 423.0%. In 2020, exports fell to 78 524 thousand US dollars, a 13.3% decrease year-over-year, creating a 5.2-fold gap between the lowest and highest values.

From 2017 to 2020, India, Vietnam, and the United States were the main export markets for Mozambique's coconuts, Brazil nuts, and cashews in value terms. India accounted for 31.1% of exports, Vietnam for 30.9%, and the United States for 10.3%, together making up 72.3% of total export value.
