The production of citrus fruit in Tonga gradually declined from 6.2 thousand t in 2018 to 6.1 thousand t in 2023. This trend was exacerbated in 2022 when the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption damaged infrastructure and disrupted agricultural activity, leading to a noticeable drop in output that year.

Imports of citrus fruit fell from 582 t in 2018 to 395 t in 2022, contributing to a contraction in total market volume. However, imports rebounded sharply to 819 t in 2023, which drove the overall market size up to 7.0 thousand t – a 6% increase from the previous year and the highest level in the period.

During these years, Tonga saw infrastructure improvements with the commissioning of solar power plants and grid batteries in 2022, enhancing energy reliability for the agricultural sector. Additionally, a 2021 law merged public higher education into a national university, aiming to build long-term skills for agriculture and trade.

Tonga's citrus fruit production experienced a two-year period of growth before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 6,258 tonnes. The following year, in 2020, output showed minimal change, with 6,247 tonnes produced, representing a slight decrease compared to 2019. The largest annual increase occurred in 2018, at 0.2%.
