Earlier Report Observations

Algeria's citrus fruit production increased from 2,956 thousand tons in 2018 to 3,168 thousand tons in 2019, supported by a protected export market to France and the development of new aeroponic vertical farming projects. This growth built upon a significant 41% expansion of citrus cultivation areas between 2010 and 2017.

Following a minor contraction, production stabilized in 2021 due to concerted state support for agricultural extension and technical services in key growing regions. During this period, a government threat to ban imports of citrus concentrate aimed to shield local processors, while ongoing modernization of processing facilities and the development of national wholesale markets strengthened the domestic supply chain.

The sector regained momentum in 2022 after targeted investments, including over 20 million DA to boost citrus farming in Oran and the inauguration of the National Seed Bank. Production then jumped to 3,438 thousand tons in 2023, driven by the annual expansion of cultivation areas by 5,000 hectares and the promotion of efficient drip irrigation techniques highlighted at the first national Citrus Salon.
