Earlier Report Observations

The cinnamon market size in SADC, measured in value terms, showed volatile movement from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 3 930 thousand US dollars in 2018, it grew to 7 615 thousand US dollars in 2023, with a peak of 6 140 thousand in 2020 and a temporary decline to 4 627 thousand in 2021.

Changes in the market volume were driven by fluctuations in domestic production, imports, and exports. Production decreased from 8 861 thousand US dollars in 2018 to 7 019 thousand in 2020, then recovered to 8 092 thousand by 2023. Imports gradually increased over the period, while exports experienced significant swings, directly affecting the net volume available on the domestic market.

In 2024, cinnamon imports into SADC reached 5 161 thousand US dollars and exports jumped to 8 013 thousand. This period saw the emergence of new product segments, such as cinnamon-flavored tea blends combining rooibos and apple, which targeted consumer demand for relaxation and comfort. Broader consumer trends toward health, wellness, and natural ingredients, alongside economic factors like cost-of-living pressures, continued to shape demand for cinnamon and its use in various product formats.
