Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, cinnamon production in Indonesia reached 76 922 tons, supported by the implementation of the Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) and a shift in forest permits toward non-timber forest products, which strengthened legal frameworks and encouraged production. However, by 2020, production dropped sharply to 48 836 tons and market volume fell to 16 114 tons, a period marked by stricter export certification requirements, including phytosanitary and origin certificates, which may have constrained supply chains.

Recovery began in 2021 as production rose to 52 260 tons and market volume expanded to 25 995 tons, partly driven by the entry of new international buyers like Thailand, which imported 10 tons of high-grade cinnamon. Growth continued into 2022, with production reaching 54 748 tons and market volume 31 023 tons, fueled by state policies that expanded plantation area to 87 100 hectares and established high-yield production blocks in Sijunjung Regency, directly boosting domestic output.

By 2023, market volume had grown further to 34 495 tons with production stabilizing at 54 658 tons, supported by the introduction of organic cultivation guidelines and enhanced national quality standards (SNI), opening premium market segments. Looking ahead, regulatory developments such as the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) effective in 2025 and ongoing Codex standard discussions are setting the stage for future market access and compliance.
