This expansion in domestic output occurred alongside significant volatility in imports, which peaked at 38.2 thousand tons in 2019 before falling sharply to 20.8 thousand tons in 2022.

The total chlorine market volume contracted from 43.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 35.4 thousand tons in 2021, primarily driven by the steep decline in imports. From 2021 onward, the market recovered, reaching 38.9 thousand tons by 2024, as steadily growing domestic production increasingly compensated for lower import levels.

Chlorine exports from Hungary remained modest but grew from less than 0.3 thousand tons in 2018 to approximately 1.1 thousand tons in 2023-2024, indicating a gradual increase in the international presence of Hungarian production.
