Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2024, Hungary's market for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine in volume terms contracted from 43 721 t to 38 940 t. This occurred despite steady growth in domestic production, which increased from 5 989 t to 9 853 t, because imports fell significantly from 37 954 t to 30 182 t over the same period. In value terms, the market nearly doubled from $5.1 million to $9.2 million, indicating a substantial rise in unit prices.

Hungary consistently ranked as the second-largest importer of these halogens in Europe, bringing in around 30 000 t annually. The country experienced a persistent downward trend in imports from 2013 onward, with a compound annual growth rate of -4.1%, which drove the overall reduction in market volume. At the same time, Hungary's import price was the lowest in Europe, at $205 per ton in 2024, a factor that likely influenced consumption patterns.

The growth in domestic production, which rose by over 60% between 2018 and 2024, partially offset the decline in imports but was not enough to prevent a net decrease in total market volume. The significant divergence between volume contraction and value expansion highlights a market where higher prices and a shifting supply structure played a defining role.
