Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2019, the chicory market volume in South Africa remained stable at around 13 000 to 13 250 tonnes. This stability was underpinned by the key role of Chicory SA in Alexandria, which processes chicory roots from farmers and supplies major beverage companies like Nestlé International and National Brands for blended coffee and chicory drinks. The diversified use of chicory in pet food and breakfast cereals also contributed to steady demand.
From 2020 onwards, the market experienced significant volatility. Volume fell sharply to 10 926 tonnes in 2020, then recovered to 11 971 tonnes in 2021 and stabilized near 12 009 tonnes in 2022. In 2023, however, volume collapsed to 5 662 tonnes, a decrease of over 50% from the previous year.
