From 2018 to 2023, the chicory market in the GCC showed moderate volatility, reaching a peak volume of 93.8 thousand kg in 2019, followed by a gradual decline to 88.8 thousand kg by 2023.

The market growth in 2019 was driven by a substantial increase in imports, which rose more than tenfold compared to the previous year, reaching 2.4 thousand kg. However, domestic production consistently decreased from 91.6 thousand kg in 2018 to 87.7 thousand kg in 2023, putting downward pressure on the overall market size.

Imports continued to play a noticeable role, with peaks in 2020 and 2022, but were unable to offset the decline in local production. By 2023, exports of chicory from the region began, albeit in small quantities, further reducing the available supply in the domestic market.

Chicory production in GCC has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, production reached 90,840 kg, which represents a slight decrease of 0.6% compared to 2019.

Chicory imports to GCC have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 2,740 kg, showing a rise of 14.9% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by an impressive 3,161.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 219.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium, Italy, and Denmark were the top suppliers of chicory to GCC, accounting for 37.0%, 32.0%, and 13.0% of imports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 82.0% of total chicory imports by volume.

Between 2017 and 2020, the country structure of chicory imports in value terms was highly concentrated, with Denmark and Belgium dominating the market. Together, these two countries accounted for 82.9% of total import flows, leaving other partners with only a minor share.
