Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2023, Qatar's market for fresh, chilled, frozen, or dried chicory roots, measured by production volume, experienced a gradual decline. Production started at 91 580 kg in 2018 and fell to 87 680 kg by 2023, representing a total decrease of approximately 4.3%. The market consisted entirely of domestic production, as imports and exports were negligible throughout the period.
The decline occurred against a backdrop of broader agricultural sector initiatives in Qatar. During these years, the government supported the expansion of sustainable farming, adoption of innovative irrigation technologies, and investments in smart agriculture, such as Hydrovest Technology's million-riyal investment in 2022. Concurrently, consumer trends shifted towards healthier foods and medicinal herbs, which could have increased demand for chicory as a dietary and medicinal ingredient.
Despite these supportive factors, chicory root production continued to edge downward, with the most notable drop of 2.2% occurring in 2022. By 2023, production stabilized just below 88 000 kg, indicating a smaller year-on-year change.
