Chicory production in Sub-Saharan Africa grew from 13.3 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 13.4 thousand tons in 2019, driven by the expansion of harvested area and rising market demand. However, output fell to 10.9 thousand tons in 2020 as reduced harvested area and yield fluctuations impacted supply, even while global health trends boosted interest in chicory as a caffeine‑free alternative.

Production recovered to 12.1 thousand tons in 2021, supported by the launch of new chicory‑root ingredient brands targeting health‑conscious consumers and the growing use of chicory as a prebiotic in animal feed. The market stabilized at 12.2 thousand tons in 2022, balancing softer global export volumes against rising consumer preference for natural, health‑oriented food and beverage products.

Output dropped sharply to 5.8 thousand tons in 2023. By 2024, market dynamics pointed to renewed interest, with reports highlighting a surge in production and investments in chemical‑free farming and advanced processing techniques, alongside growing regional demand.

Market performance showed significant fluctuations throughout the period. Production reached its lowest point in 2017, then peaked in 2019 with a 2-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa produced 10 872 tons of chicory, which represents an 18.9% decrease compared to 2019. The maximum production volume was recorded in 2019 at 13 401 tons. The most substantial growth occurred in 2018 with a 98.0% increase.
