Between 2018 and 2020, the chicken meat market in North Macedonia remained stable in volume, hovering around 41 000 t annually. A contraction occurred in 2021 and 2022, reducing the market size to 36 950 t, before a notable recovery to 41 387 t in 2023. This rebound coincided with a period of lower feed grain prices and sustained consumer demand for poultry due to its dietary profile and affordability, which supported domestic output.

Domestic production of chicken meat grew consistently from 1 499 t in 2018 to 2 074 t in 2023, a 38% increase over the period. This expansion was facilitated by improved industry conditions, including better genetics and significant investments by producers. Imports, which constitute the bulk of supply, declined from 2020 to 2022 before rising again in 2023, while exports saw a steady upward trend, nearly doubling from 2018 to 2023.

In value terms, the market demonstrated a different trajectory, rising from $54.2 million in 2018 to $69.2 million in 2023. A sharp 21.5% increase in market value in 2022 occurred despite a lower physical volume, primarily due to a significant rise in chicken meat prices across the region, influenced by higher industry concentration and production costs.

North Macedonia's chicken meat and offal production increased in 2020, ending a two-year decline. The country produced 1 494 tonnes, showing only minor fluctuations compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 12.9%, representing an average annual decline of 4.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 1 490 tonnes, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 with a 12.6% decrease.

Output was valued at 1 508 thousand US dollars, representing a modest 7.5% increase from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value decreased by 15.9%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 5.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 403 thousand US dollars, while the most significant drop occurred in 2018 with an 18.8% decrease.

Between 2017 and 2020, Bosnia and Herzegovina accounted for 76.6% of North Macedonia's total chicken meat and offal exports by volume. The remaining exports were distributed among numerous countries, each with relatively small individual shares.

Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 24.1%, equivalent to an average annual increase of 7.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 435 thousand US dollars, which also saw the sharpest decline of 4.5% that year.
