Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, Morocco's chicken meat and offal market volume expanded by 10% to 627 тыс. т. This growth was supported by the implementation of Law 49-99 (ONSSA), which established clear sanitary requirements for poultry processing facilities, creating a regulatory framework that encouraged industry modernization. Concurrently, the state-backed Green Morocco Plan provided funding to upgrade the poultry sector, aiming for self-sufficiency in white meat. In 2019, ONSSA's mandate for certification of modern small-scale slaughterhouses opened the market to new investors, further bolstering production capacity.

The market contracted sharply to 536 тыс. т in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the closure of restaurants and cancellation of festivities, significantly reducing out-of-home consumption. This demand shock coincided with a surge in the cost of imported feed ingredients like corn and soy, which raised production expenses and pressured producer margins. These combined factors led many units to cut output. The downward trend continued into 2021, albeit more gently, as the sector grappled with these persistent cost challenges and ongoing market adjustments.

A recovery began in 2022, with market volume rising to 545 тыс. т. This turnaround was aided by a 4% increase in industrial slaughterhouse production of broiler meat, partly stemming from earlier support programs for certified modern abattoirs. By 2023, the market reached 571 тыс. т, driven by a reported 6% growth in poultry meat supply. This expansion was attributed to improved productivity in modern farms, which increased the availability of chicks. Furthermore, record-high prices for red meat in 2023 shifted consumer preference towards more affordable chicken, sustaining demand and supporting market growth.
