The Moroccan beef and buffalo meat market volume remained relatively stable from 2018 to 2021, fluctuating around 290 thousand tons after a slight increase to 292 thousand tons in 2019. This period of stability was followed by a significant market contraction.

In 2022, the market volume fell sharply by 10.7% to 255.7 thousand tons. This decline was primarily driven by a severe drought and a spike in animal feed prices, which raised production costs and pressured domestic herds. To mitigate the shortage, authorities suspended import duties on live cattle under 550 kg and arranged for the import of 30 thousand head from Brazil and Uruguay in the first half of the year. Concurrently, new rules mandated the labeling of beef origin in restaurants and collective catering establishments starting March 1, 2022.

The market partially recovered in 2023, growing to 262.5 thousand tons, as the sector adapted to the challenging conditions and government measures to secure supply took effect.
