Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the chicken meat market in Mali experienced a gradual contraction, with volume easing from 44 738 t to 43 703 t. This period was marked by inflationary pressure on retail prices and a long-standing ban on the import of live birds and poultry products, which limited external supply. Although broiler production reported growth in 2019, chronic supply-side constraints including recurrent disease outbreaks and fragmented producer organization acted as a drag on market expansion, even as the state-led PDAM program aimed to improve production techniques and competitiveness.

A sharp turnaround occurred in 2021, with market volume jumping 15% to 50 303 t. This surge was primarily fueled by a drastic drop in urban livestock supplies, a 13% increase in feed costs due to a poor cotton harvest, and heightened consumer demand during the Ramadan period. The ongoing import prohibition continued to shape the market by shielding domestic producers from foreign competition during this supply-constrained phase.

Following the 2021 peak, market growth moderated, stabilizing around 50 000 t in 2022 before a slight rise to 51 066 t in 2023. By 2024, a notable trend was the resurgence of backyard poultry farming, driven by unemployment and imports of day-old chicks, which created a new segment for home-produced fresh chicken. Government-promoted seasonal meat sales during Ramadan also continued to influence consumption patterns, while the import ban remained a permanent feature of the market landscape.
