In 2018, the chestnut market in Turkey stood at 52 130 t. By 2020, it had grown to 69 010 t, marking a 32% increase over three years. Early in the period, the sector faced structural challenges, including a lack of producer knowledge in production techniques, storage, and marketing, alongside a fragmented export landscape with many small firms engaging in price competition.

After 2020, market growth stabilized with minor fluctuations. A sharp rise in chestnut prices in 2021, with early-season product reaching high retail levels, tempered consumer demand, coinciding with a slight market volume dip to 68 480 t. The following year, Düzce chestnuts obtained protected geographical indication status in December 2022, strengthening their market identity and access. Concurrently, persistently high consumer prices, driven by difficult harvesting conditions in forested areas, continued to restrain consumption. The market volume saw a modest recovery to 68 283 t by 2023.

Turkey's chestnut production increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 76 045 tonnes of chestnuts, representing a 4.7% increase compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 20.9%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 6.5%.

After a two-year decline, Turkey's chestnut production value increased. In 2020, the output was valued at 202.1 million US dollars, marking an 11.1% rise from 2019. However, between 2017 and 2020, the overall production value decreased by 14%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 4.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 181.9 million US dollars, with the largest drop of 13.8% occurring that same year.

Exports chestnuts to Turkey

Following a two-year rise, Turkey's chestnut export volumes declined. In 2020, exports stood at 9 058 tonnes, showing a sharp decrease of 37.1% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 8.2%, corresponding to an annualized decline of 2.8%. The peak was in 2019 with 14 405 tonnes, while the largest increase of 32.0% occurred in 2018.

Turkey's chestnut export value declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 24 076 thousand US dollars, reflecting a significant 33.2% year-over-year decrease. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports dropped by 34.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of -13.2%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 43 257 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 17.3% that year.

Between 2017 and 2020, Italy dominated Turkey's chestnut exports by value, capturing 75.2% of the total, while the rest was spread across numerous smaller trading partners.

Import volumes showed volatility during these years. From a low in 2017 to a peak in 2019, imports increased by 2.9 times. In 2020, Turkey imported 2 023 tonnes of chestnuts, indicating a 23.8% contraction compared to the previous year. The maximum volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 653 tonnes, with the largest surge of 73.3% occurring in 2018.

However, between 2017 and 2020, imports overall rose by 16.7%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 5.3%. The highest value was in 2019 at 1 994 thousand US dollars, with the largest jump of 42.3% recorded in 2018.
