From 2018 to 2020, the banana market volume in Turkey grew from 663 thousand tons to 900 thousand tons. This expansion was primarily driven by a rapid increase in domestic production, which rose from 499 thousand tons to 728 thousand tons. Key drivers included state subsidies for greenhouse cultivation, the widespread adoption of protected agriculture in regions like Mersin and Antalya, and the transfer of variety rights to the private sector, which spurred investment and the opening of new facilities. These developments enabled local output to increasingly replace imports, supporting overall market growth.

The upward trend continued through 2021 and 2022, with production reaching 997 thousand tons and market volume peaking at over 1 million tons in 2022. The expansion of cultivation areas was accompanied by the adoption of climate-controlled greenhouse technologies and tissue-culture seedling production by private companies, which boosted yields. The establishment of producer associations helped coordinate sectoral efforts. During this period, global supply chain disruptions and extreme weather events affected banana availability and prices internationally, but the robust domestic production base helped cushion the Turkish market.

In 2023, the market volume declined to 980 thousand tons as domestic production fell to 930 thousand tons, interrupting the multi-year growth trend.

Turkey's banana production value also rose for the third year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 364.3 million US dollars, reflecting a 15.2% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 96.6%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 25.3%.

Turkey's banana export volume declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 201.6 thousand tonnes of bananas, down by 16.9% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 49.5%, with an average annual decline of 20.4%.

After a two-year decline, Turkey's banana import volume showed a slight increase. In 2020, the country imported 373.4 thousand tonnes of bananas, with no significant change from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 36.2%, equating to an average annual decline of 13.9%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 372.8 thousand tonnes, with the largest year-over-year drop of 23.6% also occurring in that year.
