Earlier Report Observations

The Norwegian cherry market began the period at 2 976 t in 2018 but contracted significantly the following year to 2 395 t. This drop coincided with a sharp fall in domestic production, which industry reports from the time linked to ongoing challenges with pests like the cherry fruit fly and aphids affecting yields. Import volumes also declined from over 2 000 t to 1 706 t, contributing to the smaller overall market size.

After stabilizing around 2 380 t in 2020, the market recovered to 2 621 t in 2021 as local production improved. However, from 2022 onwards, the total market volume resumed a downward trend, reaching 2 319 t by 2023. This was primarily driven by a continued decline in imports, which fell to 1 204 t, even as domestic output rose above 1 100 t, suggesting a shift in supply sources.

Throughout 2023 and looking ahead, strong consumer trends have emerged in Norway focusing on sustainability, health, and natural products. This shift in preferences is increasing demand for cherries as a source of vitamins and antioxidants and is favoring produce perceived as organic or sustainably grown. These evolving consumption patterns are occurring alongside a projected further decrease in import volumes, indicating a potential long-term change in the market's structure.
