Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the cherry market in Eastern Europe reached a volume of 1 219 thousand tonnes, with production at 1 158 thousand tonnes. This high output was supported by the expanding adoption of intensive cultivation technologies, which enhanced orchard productivity and fruit quality. However, production fell to 991 thousand tonnes in 2019, reducing the market volume to 1 063 thousand tonnes.

The market recovered in 2020 despite uncertainties from the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected demand and supply chains. Production rose to 1 035 thousand tonnes, and market volume increased to 1 114 thousand tonnes. Growth continued into 2021, aided by advancements in post-harvest technologies that extended transport distances and preserved freshness, boosting export potential. This helped lift production to 1 088 thousand tonnes and market volume to 1 170 thousand tonnes. The upward trend persisted in 2022, with production reaching 1 125 thousand tonnes and market volume 1 214 thousand tonnes, although Turkish producers remained competitive due to favorable weather.

In 2023, production declined to 1 026 thousand tonnes, and market volume dropped to 1 135 thousand tonnes. This decrease was driven by adverse weather conditions, including frosts in May that damaged orchards and reduced the supply of early-season varieties.
