Earlier Report Observations

Rwanda's cereal germ production volume fluctuated over the 2018-2023 period. After an initial decline in 2019, output recovered and grew from 30,832 t in 2020 to 35,273 t in 2022. This expansion was supported by the ongoing implementation of the national Strategic Plan for Agriculture Transformation, which prioritized investments in sanitary and phytosanitary standards to improve market access for cereals and promoted sustainable conservation agriculture practices to enhance yields.

Production decreased to 32,314 t in 2023. In February 2024, Rwanda promulgated a biosafety law regulating the handling and use of genetically modified organisms in food, which establishes a new framework for the cereal sector.
