A sharp drop to 316.8 млн долл. occurred in 2023, coinciding with the rising dominance of hybrid heat pump systems in the retrofit market, which lessened the need for standalone boiler replacements. The market rebounded strongly to 368.8 млн долл. in 2024, supported by relatively low gas prices that made boilers more attractive and by electricity grid congestion concerns that hampered the adoption of competing heat pumps.

Throughout the period, factors such as subsidy schemes for heat pumps, the introduction of mandatory maintenance intervals for boilers, and a shortage of skilled installers continued to shape the competitive landscape between heating technologies.

Production central heating boilers in the Netherlands

The Netherlands saw its central heating boiler production decline for the second year in a row. In 2020, output was valued at 542.9 million US dollars, down 1.9% from the previous year. From 2018 to 2020, production fell by 8.8%, with an average annual decline of 3.0%.

Exports central heating boilers from the Netherlands

Exports in kind, t

Central heating boiler exports from the Netherlands grew for the second consecutive year. In 2021, shipments reached 23 003 tonnes, a 31.8% increase compared to 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, exports rose by 29%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 8.9%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 16 233 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 9.0%.

From 2018 to 2021, Germany, Italy, and France remained the top destinations for Dutch central heating boiler exports in volume terms. Germany accounted for 23.0% of exports, Italy for 14.8%, and France for 14.1%, together making up 51.9% of total shipments.

After two years of decline, central heating boiler exports from the Netherlands rebounded. In 2021, export value reached 274.3 million US dollars, a solid 22.5% increase over 2020. From 2018 to 2021, exports grew by 9.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 224.0 million US dollars, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 at 6.7%.

The value structure of exports from 2018 to 2021 shows a diversified partner base. Germany accounted for 19.3% of export value, France for 15.3%, and Italy for 11.3%, together representing 45.9% of total flows. The remaining 54.1% was distributed among numerous smaller markets.

The Netherlands' central heating boiler imports increased for the third consecutive year. In 2021, import volume reached 4 359 tonnes, a sharp 81.0% rise compared to the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, imports surged by 142.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 34.4%.
