Castor seed production in Africa began the period at 109.1 thousand tons in 2018, stabilized in 2019, and rose to 111.9 thousand tons by 2020. Government initiatives to promote farming, including seed distribution to smallholder farmers, and increased interest in the crop for biofuel, cosmetic, and medical applications supported the market. The entry of an international company investing in a local processing facility in 2019 marked a shift toward biofuel production, laying groundwork for future expansion.

Production continued to grow, reaching 118.9 thousand tons in 2022 before stabilizing at 118.1 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was driven by private sector investments in extraction and processing facilities, pilot projects in Makueni County in collaboration with the Italian government, and partnerships for seedling distribution and agronomic training. The ongoing development of processing plants in Kwale and other counties enhanced the value chain and supported farmer incomes.

In 2024, government and private sector collaboration focused on boosting the castor oil value chain, with significant investment in a processing plant in Kwale aimed at biofuel production and export. Seedling farms and empowerment programs across multiple counties, along with international partnerships, indicated sustained market development.

In Africa, castor seed production reached 111.9 thousand tonnes in 2020, representing a 4.3% increase compared to the previous year. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 8.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.7%. The most significant production decline occurred in 2019, when output fell by 1.7%. Conversely, the largest increase was recorded in 2018, with production rising by 5.7%.
