In 2020, Western Africa produced 98.8 million tonnes of cassava, marking a 2.3% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 2.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 102.7 million tonnes, which represented a 6.8% increase. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest decline, with production dropping by 6.0%.

Exports cassava from Western Africa

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Western Africa exported 2,515 tonnes of cassava in 2020, a decrease of 20.8% year-on-year. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2017, while the peak occurred in 2019 at 3,177 tonnes, representing a 290.0% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, the export structure for cassava in kind was balanced rather than concentrated. Turkey accounted for 23.0% of exports, Canada for 12.0%, and the Netherlands for 8.9%, together making up 43.9% of total flows. The remaining 56.1% was distributed among many other countries.

Cassava exports from Western Africa increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 1,028 thousand US dollars, a sharp rise of 46.7% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 317.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 61.0%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Canada, and Turkey were the key partners for cassava exports in value terms. The Netherlands accounted for 20.5% of exports, Canada for 17.8%, and Turkey for 13.1%, together representing 51.4% of total flows.

After two years of growth, cassava imports into Western Africa declined. In 2020, import volume reached 132 tonnes, down by 9.6% year-on-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 49.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 14.4%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 146 tonnes, following a 65.1% increase in 2018.

After two years of increase, Western Africa's cassava import volume declined. In 2020, imports were recorded at 162 thousand US dollars, a decrease of 11.7% compared to the previous year.
