Earlier Report Observations

The Rwandan cassava market grew from 1.2 million tons in 2018 to 1.4 million tons in 2022, driven by the government's Fourth Strategic Plan for Agricultural Transformation (PSTA 4). This plan, launched in 2018, prioritized cassava cultivation through targeted public investments, which boosted production and processing capacity. Strong economic growth in 2019, fueled by the agricultural sector, further supported demand, while continued industrialization efforts and modernization of processing units in 2022 strengthened the value chain.

In 2023, market volume fell to 1.4 million tons, primarily due to climate shocks including floods that affected agricultural output. During the same year, Rwanda authorized the use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture, paving the way for future trials on cassava which could influence production resilience and market dynamics.
