Production of taro in Rwanda grew consistently from 168 thousand tons in 2018 to 200.9 thousand tons in 2021. This expansion was supported by government policies enhancing agricultural infrastructure, including increased storage capacity, the establishment of drying areas, and the promotion of a functional cold chain. The Country Strategic Plan 2019-2023 further guided efforts to improve food security and agricultural productivity.

Growth slowed to 1% in 2022, with output reaching 202.9 thousand tons, as the government approved the $300 million Commercialization and De-Risking for Agricultural Transformation (CDAT) project to increase production of key crops. However, high food inflation of 44.3% pressured consumer purchasing power. Production then declined to 191.9 thousand tons in 2023, amid ongoing supply chain disruptions and variable climatic conditions that affected agricultural output.

Rwanda's taro production increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 188.0 K t of taro, marking a 9.5% rise compared to 2019. However, looking at the entire 2017-2020 period, production actually decreased by 12.5%, which translates to an annualized decline of 4.4%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 168.0 K t, with the largest year-on-year drop of 21.9% also occurring that year.
