Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2022, the market volume for fresh or chilled pumpkins, squash and gourds in Rwanda grew steadily from 260.9 thousand tons to 270.1 thousand tons. This expansion was supported by the development of the horticulture sector, including increased vegetable exports under the national 'Rwandafresh' brand, which encouraged broader production. The Umuganura cultural celebration in 2019 also reinforced local demand as these crops are traditional staples.
Government policy emphasizing food and nutrition security in 2020 further promoted pumpkin cultivation as part of crop diversification. After reaching a peak in 2022, the market volume experienced a modest decline to 268.6 thousand tons in 2023. During this period, the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda conducted seasonal agricultural surveys to improve data collection and inform sectoral decisions.
