Earlier Report Observations

After a slight decrease in 2019, cassava production in Africa rebounded and climbed from 196.9 million tonnes in 2018 to 219.9 million tonnes in 2023. This growth was primarily fueled by targeted government agricultural programs in Nigeria designed to enhance yield and expand cultivated area, coupled with policies that promoted the industrialization of the cassava supply chain.

Industrial demand for cassava expanded significantly, particularly for bioethanol, bioplastics, and gluten-free food products. This diversification into new applications, along with increased consumer awareness of cassava's nutritional benefits, supported market growth even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when supply chains faced disruptions but production remained resilient due to the crop's essential nature.

The market saw substantial investments in processing capacity, including the launch of new cassava transformation units by major companies like Olam Group. Entry of new players with innovative technologies further boosted production efficiency and product quality, aligning with stricter labeling and traceability requirements that enhanced market standards.
