Cassava production in Madagascar increased notably in 2019 to 2 914 thousand tons, a rise supported by the AROPA project initiated in the Androy region the previous year, which aimed to strengthen farmer organizations and build 15 cassava processing units to improve food security and nutrition.

Following a drop to 2 600 thousand tons in 2020, output stabilized around 2 500-2 600 thousand tons. The market's structure began to shift with the 2021 founding of Malakass, a new processor establishing a bio and fair-trade cassava flour plant in Tulear with an annual capacity of 1 000 tons, marking a move toward higher-value products despite its limited initial scale.

From 2022, national policy under the Food Sovereignty Pact promoted improved cultivation techniques and mobile processing units to increase yields and add value. This focus on quality was exemplified in 2023-2024 as Malakass obtained a high-quality label for its flour and expanded its distribution, aligning with broader industrial goals for sustainable cassava processing and export.

Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 3.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 2 500 K t, while the highest was in 2019 at 2 914 K t. The most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2019, reaching 16.6%.
