The cassava market in Suriname contracted significantly from 2018 to 2023, with total volume falling by more than half over the six-year period. Starting at 8 170 t, the market dropped to 3 906 t, a decline exceeding 50%. The most pronounced decrease happened in 2020, when volume fell by 26% year-on-year to 5 770 t.

Following the steep drop in 2020, the market continued to shrink, though the rate of decline varied. Reductions of 8% in 2021 and 24% in 2022 brought the volume down to 4 028 t. By 2023, the contraction slowed markedly to just 3%, suggesting the market may have been approaching a steadier level around 3 900 t.

Cassava production in Suriname declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 5 763 tonnes of cassava, which represents a 26.0% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 24.8%, translating to an annualized decline of 9.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 8 170 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 6.7% that year.
