Earlier Report Observations

Taro production in French Polynesia has traditionally been dominated by small-scale, subsistence-oriented farms run by Polynesian growers, with only minor surpluses reaching the local market. This structure was reflected in an initial market volume of 245 tons in 2018, which then underwent a significant contraction, falling to 154 tons by 2020.

A recovery phase followed, with production rising to 176 tons in 2021 and further to 207 tons in 2022, before stabilizing at 208 tons in 2023.

A notable development for the local agricultural sector was the organization of the first dedicated terroir product market, 'Te Matete Hotu Rau', in Tahiti in 2024. This initiative, launched in partnership with the Chamber of Agriculture and Lagoon Fisheries, aims to promote and improve the distribution of local products, including taro.
