Cassava market volume in Burundi grew from 2 398 thousand tons in 2018 to 2 825 thousand tons in 2020. This expansion was initially supported by the adoption of Law No. 1/01 in January 2018, which ratified the Agricultural and Rural Financial Inclusion Support Project (PAIFAR-B), enhancing funding for farmers and directly boosting cassava cultivation and output.

Following a contraction to 2 761 thousand tons in 2021, the market recovered to 2 796 thousand tons in 2022. The recovery was driven by a sharp rise in cassava prices, with the cost of cassava flour doubling that year, which increased profitability and incentivized higher production. The sector was also reinforced by the ratification of Law No. 1/16 in June 2021 under the Sustainable Development Support Project for Agriculture and Livestock Value Chains (PADCAE-B), aiming to develop the cassava value chain.

Market volume settled at 2 739 thousand tons in 2023. Subsequent regulatory measures in 2024 included tax exemptions for dried cassava and cassava flour under the 2023-2024 Finance Law and Decree No. 100/224, which implemented provisions of the new Mining Code to facilitate artisanal cassava activities and market access.

Burundi's cassava production grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 2 817 thousand tonnes of cassava, marking a 17.0% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 23.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.2%.
