Fiji's cassava market volume grew from 71.5 thousand tons in 2018 to 74.9 thousand tons in 2019, a period when the Fiji Competition & Consumer Commission introduced price control orders to stabilize retail pricing. This expansion was interrupted in 2020 as the market contracted to 70.8 thousand tons, mirroring a 5.4% national decline in cassava production that constrained supply.

The market rebounded strongly in 2021, surging to 85.4 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by the launch of the Vertically Integrated Cassava Flour Enterprise, which created new industrial demand for raw cassava. Continued growth followed, with volumes reaching 92.9 thousand tons in 2022 and 105.9 thousand tons in 2023, supported by amended price control regulations that aimed to maintain market accessibility.

Recent initiatives have focused on securing future growth. In 2024, the government launched the Beqa Yellow Cassava variety to meet export demand, allocated budget funds for cassava flour processing machines, and saw Tavioka Organic secure a major weekly purchase agreement with northern farmers, creating a stable outlet for production.

Cassava production in Fiji grew for two consecutive years before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 76 030 tonnes. However, in 2020, output fell to 71 890 tonnes, representing a 5.4% decrease from the previous year. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 5.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.8%. The most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, when production rose by 6.2%.

Exports cassava from Fiji

Exports in kind, t

Fiji's cassava exports experienced growth for two years before a downturn. In 2019, exports peaked at 1 146 tonnes. The following year, in 2020, they decreased to 1 119 tonnes, a 2.3% decline from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased significantly by 76.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 20.9%. The largest year-on-year increase was recorded in 2018, when exports surged by 37.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, New Zealand and Australia remained the dominant markets for Fiji's cassava exports in volume terms, together accounting for 85.8% of total shipments. Other trading partners played a minor role during this period.

The value of Fiji's cassava exports rose for two years before declining. In 2019, it reached its highest point at 1 056 thousand US dollars. In 2020, export value fell to 1 016 thousand US dollars, reflecting a 3.7% decrease from the previous year. Over the four-year span from 2017 to 2020, export value increased by 79%, with an average annual growth rate of 21.4%. The most notable increase occurred in 2019, when export value jumped by 47.4%.
