The market for capsicum and pimenta fruits in Fiji expanded from 574 t in 2018 to 959 t in 2020. This growth was primarily driven by a surge in domestic production, which more than doubled from 263 t in 2019 to 774 t in 2020. The government's emphasis on developing local production of high-potential fresh produce, including capsicum, to reduce the import bill by $24.1 million provided a direct incentive for increased cultivation.

Production continued to rise sharply, reaching 2 501 t in 2023, which propelled the total market volume to 2 782 t. Fiji's strategic position as the Pacific's largest fresh produce exporter to New Zealand, supplying over 80% of the region's exports, along with emerging value-added production initiatives, supported this sustained expansion. These efforts helped transition niche exports into feasible market segments, further stimulating output.

Fiji's production of capsicum and pimenta fruits has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 774.4 tonnes, marking a significant increase of 194.0% compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production surged by 475.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 79.2%.

In 2020, the output was valued at 3 427 thousand US dollars, showing a substantial increase of 155.3% over the previous year. After two years of decline, Fiji's export volumes of capsicum and pimenta fruits have rebounded. In 2020, the country exported 42.5 tonnes, which is 8.2% higher than the year before. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 25.5%, with an average annual decline of 9.4%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 39.2 tonnes, while the largest drop occurred in 2018 at 24.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, New Zealand was the dominant destination for Fiji's capsicum and pimenta fruit exports in volume terms, accounting for 88.6% of total flows. The remaining share was distributed among various smaller markets.

In 2020, exports amounted to 188 thousand US dollars, reflecting a moderate decline of 6.0% compared to 2019. Following two years of growth, Fiji's import volumes of capsicum and pimenta fruits have declined. In 2020, imports totaled 226.8 tonnes, representing a sharp decrease of 41.5% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 21.2%, with an average annual reduction of 7.6%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 388.0 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 27.3%.
