The cabbage market in Fiji saw a remarkable expansion from 2018 to 2023, with total volume more than doubling from 4 960 t to 10 537 t. This growth was punctuated by two major leaps: a 44.5% surge in 2020 pushed the market to 7 230 t, followed by an even larger 50.9% increase in 2023 to over 10 500 t.

The rise in market volume was primarily fueled by a substantial increase in domestic cabbage production, which grew from 4 581 t to 10 172 t over the same period. Imports played a minor role, typically ranging between 300 t and 400 t per year, while exports remained insignificant at less than 30 t annually.

Between the sharp growth phases, the market experienced a brief correction and stabilization. After peaking in 2020, volume dipped by 2.5% in 2021 and then remained steady around 7 000 t in 2022 before the next upturn.

Fiji's cabbage production has grown for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 6 942 tonnes of cabbages, marking a 48.9% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 121.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 30.4%.

Export volumes showed significant volatility during this period. The lowest exports were recorded in 2018 at 5.5 tonnes, while the highest came in 2020 with 11.5 tonnes, representing a 2.1-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports increased by 7.6% compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018, falling by 48.2%, while the biggest increase was in 2019, rising by 94.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Tuvalu, New Zealand, and Kiribati were the largest buyers of Fiji's cabbages by volume. Tuvalu accounted for 45.7% of exports, New Zealand for 9.3%, and Kiribati for 6.3%. Together, these three countries represented 61.3% of Fiji's total cabbage exports during this period.

Export values displayed an unstable trend throughout the timeframe. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 17.8 thousand US dollars, while the highest came in 2019 at 40.2 thousand US dollars, showing a 2.3-fold variation between these years. In 2020, export value decreased by 55.8% compared to the previous year. The largest increase occurred in 2019, rising by 102.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Nauru consistently led as the top destinations for Fiji's cabbage exports by value. Tuvalu accounted for 49.3% of export value, Kiribati for 16.2%, and Nauru for 1.6%. Collectively, these three countries represented 67.2% of Fiji's total cabbage export value during this period.

Fiji's cabbage imports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 300.0 tonnes, representing a 15.0% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 5.6%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 1.9%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 384.3 tonnes, which marked a 21.0% increase from the previous year.

From 2017 to 2020, New Zealand remained the dominant and nearly exclusive source for Fiji's cabbage imports by volume, accounting for 95.1% of total imports during this period.

Fiji's cabbage import value declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, import value reached 364.9 thousand US dollars, showing a 9.7% decrease from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 594.1 thousand US dollars, which represented a 59.7% increase from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 32.0%.
