Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2019, Cuba's cassava market volume expanded from 836 thousand tons to 920 thousand tons. This growth was driven by the widespread adoption of improved clones, planted on over 90% of cassava areas, and the mechanization of 70% of the harvest, which raised yields and ensured year-round availability of certified planting material.
In 2020, production fell sharply to 654.5 thousand tons. During this period, technological advances enabled increased processing of cassava for the food industry, removing toxic glycosides and extending shelf life. The market then recovered gradually, reaching 717.8 thousand tons in 2022 and 757.0 thousand tons in 2023. This recovery coincided with the introduction of maximum price controls for cassava by Havana's provincial government in 2022, aimed at regulating supply amid inflation and scarcity, a measure that remained in place through 2023.
The price control policy, along with persistent challenges such as agricultural input shortages and reliance on informal markets, helped stabilize the market and supported production growth after the 2020 downturn.
