Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, Peru's cassava production rose from 1.24 million metric tons to 1.34 million metric tons, a growth supported by government-led research to identify cultivation zones and genetic diversity. Studies initiated by the Ministry of Environment and the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute aimed at strengthening conservation and responsible use of genetic resources, providing a foundation for improved crop management and sustainable production.

The development of the cassava value chain from 2021 onward, with companies like Agrollanos processing raw cassava into peeled, precooked, and frozen products, added significant value and extended shelf life. This processing demand, coupled with rising exports which reached 5.8 thousand metric tons in 2022, encouraged further production growth. Although adverse weather conditions in 2023 reduced output destined for the domestic market by 11.6%, overall production climbed to 1.5 million metric tons, driven by robust export and industrial demand for processed cassava.

In 2024, Peruvian cassava exports continued to expand, with 3.8 million kilograms shipped in the first eight months alone. Regulatory changes affecting traceability and foreign trade procedures, along with public investments in port infrastructure, facilitated agricultural exports. Consumer shifts toward convenient frozen products and sustained global demand for cassava in food, feed, and industrial applications reinforced market opportunities for processed and frozen cassava products.
