Earlier Report Observations

The Cuban garlic market saw a brief expansion in 2019, reaching 19 446 tons, but entered a prolonged contraction from 2020 onward. By 2023, total market volume had fallen to 9 717 tons, representing a decline of more than 50% from the 2019 peak.

This reduction was driven primarily by a drop in domestic garlic production, which decreased from 19 400 tons in 2019 to 9 715 tons in 2023. Imports, while fluctuating, remained at low levels and did not offset the loss in local output.

In 2024, the market continued to be characterized by limited domestic production and reliance on imported garlic, with import volumes rising to 116 tons. The essential role of garlic in Cuban cuisine maintains demand, but supply constraints persist.
