Burundi's potato market volume expanded from 303 thousand tons in 2018 to 423 thousand tons in 2022. This growth was initially supported by the adoption of the National Development Plan 2018-2027, which aimed to modernize agriculture through mechanization and regional crop specialization. In subsequent years, a national tender for certified potato seeds in 2020 improved the quality of planting material, while research by the Institute of Agricultural Sciences of Burundi in 2021 focused on characterizing and multiplying climate-adapted local varieties for wider farmer distribution.

After reaching a peak in 2022, the market volume stabilized at 419 thousand tons in 2023. During this period, the Faculty of Agronomy and Bio-engineering at the University of Burundi actively promoted modern potato production techniques, including the harvest of the Victoria variety. Developments in 4 included the launch of an innovative processing plant by the Youth Economic Empowerment and Employment Program to produce potato-derived goods like chips and flakes, alongside cooperative-led seed multiplication projects funded to enhance local production capacity and explore export opportunities.

Burundi's potato production declined after two years of growth. In 2019, production peaked at 376.4 thousand tons, but then fell by 5.0% year-on-year to 357.7 thousand tons in 2020. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 74.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 20.4%. The largest annual increase occurred in 2018, when production rose by 47.7%.
