The casein market in Argentina showed significant volatility from 2018 to 2023. After an initial volume of 11 314 tons in 2018, the market contracted in 2019 and 2020 under the influence of macroeconomic crisis, high inflation, and the COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced consumption and production. However, in 2021, market volume sharply increased to 12 294 tons, driven by strengthened global demand for casein due to its use in processed foods and protein-rich diets.

Following the peak in 2021, the market began to decline again in 2022 and 2023. This downturn was linked to a reduction in milk production in Argentina caused by low milk prices and increased slaughter of dairy cows, which limited the availability of raw material for casein production. Moreover, persistently high inflation, reaching 211.4% in 2023, negatively affected profitability and investment in the dairy sector, leading to a further drop in market volume to 7 044 tons in 2023.
