The market's supply relied heavily on imports, which reached 3 765 t in 2022, while exports more than doubled from 2018 levels. A sharp contraction occurred in 2023, with market volume falling to 1 770 t as imports declined and production moderated from its peak.

This downturn coincided with broader regional economic pressures, where inflationary trends shifted consumer spending in fast-moving consumer goods towards price-driven value growth rather than volume expansion, affecting food category demand.

Sub-Saharan Africa's casein production has grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 572.6 t of casein, marking a significant year-over-year increase of 43.6%. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 20%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.3%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 260.9 t, which also saw the largest decline of 45.3%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest increase at 52.8%.

The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 875 t, which also saw the largest increase of 13.8%.
