From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for fresh carrots and turnips in Spain declined from 302.6 thousand tons to 282.2 thousand tons. This decrease was primarily driven by a consecutive reduction in carrot cultivation area across the country, which led to lower domestic production. While Spain maintained its position as a significant exporter within the European fresh vegetable market, rising exports coupled with falling output reduced the amount of product available for local consumption.

The market recovered to 299.3 thousand tons in 2021, supported by increasing consumer demand for fresh and healthy products, amplified by a broader health‑conscious trend. Although national carrot production fell by over 46 thousand tons in 2022, market volume still edged up to 304.3 thousand tons. This growth was underpinned by persistent Spanish consumer preference for organic and fresh vegetables, along with rising imports, with France emerging as the leading supplier.

In 2023, the market shrank to 276.4 thousand tons. This drop was influenced by a 3.1% rise in carrot prices due to inflation and higher energy costs, which dampened demand. Additionally, the ongoing impact of the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis on living costs and consumption habits further contributed to the market contraction.

Spain's exports of carrots and turnips rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 128.6 thousand tonnes, up 15.8% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 15.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.0%. The lowest export volume was in 2018, at 100.0 thousand tonnes, which also experienced the largest drop of 10.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Germany, and Portugal were the main buyers of Spanish carrots and turnips, accounting for 25.0%, 20.1%, and 16.8% of exports in volume, respectively. Together, they made up 62.0% of total exports.

In 2020, Spain's carrot and turnip exports in value terms amounted to 84 207 thousand US dollars, a significant 19.2% increase from 2019.
